Dag Gadol. 11 in x 11 in, pen & ink, 2023. Gates of Hell. Auguste Rodin. Stanford University

Rodin’s Gates. 16 in x 20 in, oil on canvas, 2021. I’ve been meaning to post this painting I made awhile back, but wanted to do it justice, as it means a lot to me. I completed this in 2020 during the pandemic alongside attending Portland State University for my Master of Education. After long hours of coursework and student teaching l would work on this painting as a way to wind down. I credit this painting, second of course to the support of my loving fiancé Sammy, as being paramount in retaining my sanity during this challenging, yet rewarding year. Due to its detail, I was able to work on it slowly, sometimes only for 30 mins or so at a time. This allowed the perfect amount of time to decompress. This painting pays homage to The Gates of Hell by Auguste Rodin (France. 1840-1917). The Gates of Hell is a bronze sculpture that is influenced by Dante Alighieri’s Inferno, themes which are prevalent in Rodin’s work. I have always been interested in reading the Inferno and saw fit to finally realize this goal alongside the creation of this piece. I immersed myself in the worlds that both Dante and Rodin created. Last Spring, Sammy and I took a road trip to San Fransisco, and the only thing on my mind was when I would ask her to marry me (I didn’t make it that long and ended up asking on the road trip down at sunset). We went on to have an amazing trip together. One night in the hotel room, and on a whim, I Googled where the closest cast of The Gates of Hell was. As there are only a few casts from the original plaster, I was astounded that there was one at Stanford University! On the day we were to head back to Portland, it didn’t take Sammy much convincing to go out of our way and make our 11 hr journey a 13 hour one. She knew how much this work meant to me.
